Portfolio Statement:

My practice is deeply rooted in nature, shaped by lived experience across the landscapes of my South African motherland and the English countryside.

For me, emotion, memory, and the natural world are inseparable; painting becomes a site where these elements converge.

I use nature as a way of understanding and processing feeling. Rather than depicting a specific place, I seek to evoke the sensory and emotional experience of being within one.

Alongside this, I have long grappled with the human form, engaging in a continual push and pull between representation, dissolution, and erasure.

Through this tension, I interrogate traditional depictions of the female body and nature within Western art history, questioning how both have been idealised, possessed, and controlled. I am particularly interested in the unstable boundary between body and landscape, and how these distinctions can collapse within the painted image.

Influenced by Ana Mendieta’s notion of a “Universal fluid,” my practice explores the interconnectedness of body and land through semi-abstracted figures and landscapes. I seek to dismantle hierarchies that position the human above nature, an urgency intensified by the climate crisis. I hope my paintings encourage viewers to look more closely at the natural world.

My work evokes life’s inherent dichotomies: birth and death, pleasure and pain, tenderness and savagery - while resisting fixed narratives. Drawing on anti-essentialist philosophy, I embrace ambiguity and instability, allowing meaning to remain fluid and open to interpretation. Recently, materiality has become central to my process, driving a shift away from representation toward a more intuitive and increasingly abstract visual language.

I incorporate materials such as coffee grounds and sand to build textured, earthy surfaces that feel tactile and alive, connecting the work physically and symbolically to the land while disrupting conventional painterly surfaces. Through layering, erasure, and deliberate mark-making, images oscillate between figuration and abstraction.

Both autobiographical and universal, my work invites viewers to inhabit the space between comfort and discomfort, reflecting the fleeting, shifting nature of existence.
